The Sheffield Varsity is a celebration of sport at Sheffield, showcasing the cities facilities and capabilities for high profile sporting events. Varsity 2011 ran across 8 days starting on Wednesday 30th March at Abbeydale, and finished at Sheffield Wednesday Football Club on Wednesday 6th April 2011.
Each year students from The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University swap their books for skis, their essays for their running shoes, their lecturers for their captains and their seminar groups for their teammates to go head to head in their annual Varsity competition which sees both Universities compete against each other through sporting contests.
The competition this year was the biggest it has ever been with over 60 fixtures and using over 15 venues with over 1,500 students competing and over 9000 people supportin them, within the City of Sheffield to showcase the best of University Sport.
This year's event was the 15th staging of the competition. The final took place on 6th April with the women's and men's football matches with Howard Webb MBE acting as the match referee.
